Description:
One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

My Rating:

My Review:
Insurgent picks up right where Divergent leaves off.  Looking for answers and safety, many of the survivors look to the other factions for help.  Finding varying levels of support  with the other factions, Tabias and Tris find themselves looking to the factionless for help.  Soon Janine makes it clear that her plans weren't thwarted by the failed simulation, nor was the simulation the end of her plans.  Trying to solve the crisis, Tris makes decision after decision that puts significant strain on her relationship with Tabias.  In Insurgent, it appears that trust is a luxury.

On the story...
While I had issues with the writing and dialogue in Divergent, I had no such problems here.  Insurgent is exciting with adventure from beginning to end.  The violence is present as in Divergent but at least here there is a point (there's a war going on!).  Tris drove me crazy in this book.  Her decisions weren't well thought out and I started to think of her as a liar.  She stayed true to her character so I can't complain too much.  Though I felt sorry for both Tris and Tabias at times, their relationship was probably more realistic than other YA relationships.  They had some real trust issues, which is understandable considering they really hadn't had time to get to know each other.  I was constantly shocked by events and I never saw the BIG betrayal coming.  I'd advise anyone reading this series not to get attached to the characters because they drop like flies.  We learn more about those who are Divergent as well.  Of course the book ends on a cliffhanger.  I mean, it is a YA trilogy after all.

On the narrator...
While I didn't recognize the name when I picked the audio, I instantly recognized this voice.  I have the same critique of Ms. Galvin as I did with Graveminder.  There is little voice differentials between the different characters.

Overall...
I enjoyed the fast paced plot of Insurgent.  Though I can't say I'm emotionally invested in the characters the way that I was in The Hunger Games trilogy, I do find it to be quite engaging.  The violence and gore reminded me of Mockingjay.  I'm really not looking forward to seeing even more of it in the last book in the trilogy.

P.S.  Four is mostly referred to as Tabias in this book.  I prefer Four so much more though.  Anyone have thoughts or preferences on this?

P.P.S.  This goes toward that Dystopia challenge that I committed to.  I wasn't kidding when I said there were more to come.

  2. Insurgent to me was heads and tails above Divergent! I felt it was much more "meat" of the story than just plodding to the point. GREAT REVIEW!

  4. I only skimmed because I don't want to spoil anything when I can finally get to this one. I loved Divergent so definitely looking forward to this one. I'm glad to know that this one picks right up from Divergent and that it is fast paced and full of action! Can't wait til this drops in paperback!

  5. The beginning of this book wasn't as exciting as I was hoping for but by the end I was hooked. I felt that Four and Tris's relationship was off in this book. They weren't connecting as they did in Divergent.

    1. They weren't as connected but I think it is because they had to face real problems. I'm not sure Tris made it easy either. They needed to communicate or something.

  7. You are a dystopian reading machine. :) OK, I haven't read Insurgent yet, but I can already tell you I prefer Four to Tabias. I love Four, and I don't even get book crushes... normally. ;)

    1. I am a dystopian reading machine! Lol. Four is different in this book. But the name Four just sounded cool and I loved the persona that went with that. All that's gone in this one.

  9. Oh, it does drive me a little nuts when there is little difference between the voices because it makes it hard to keep track of who's talking.

Glad the book was okay over all.

    1. It's annoying. I think you get used to it when you settle into it but it just isn't as fun.
