Foodie Fridays... Poll: What do you look for in a recipe/cookbook?

I'm back again participating in the Geeky Blogger Book Blog's new Foodie Friday's meme.  She started this meme to combine her two faves--books and cooking.  Seeing as how I share those loves AND cooking decreases my stress, I couldn't contain my excitement.  I could kill two birds with one stone. It will be the perfect addition to Reflections of a Bookaholic as other content will slow and I can document my cooking.

This week's Foodie Friday post asks about you!! I want to get an idea of what people look for in cookbooks or recipes.  So please tell me what you think by answering the poll below.  I hope to use the results to make my reviews more helpful in the future.  If you choose "other" as an answer choice, please tell me why in the comments.

P.S.  I'm participating in a giveaway hop this week and answering this poll is an entry.  Although the giveaway isn't up yet, check back by the end of the night to enter the giveaway.

  1. I think I like stuff that it's simple to do, that don't require hard to get equipment or ingredients. I don't mind long prep times but then, I'm mexican, we prep like crazy when we want to make things from scratch.

  3. I voted! For me, it's the types of ingredients required in the recipe. I know flavors pretty well and I can tell by the ingredients if it would be a dish that my husband and I both would like.

  4. i picked types of ingredients, b/c i prefer to make veggie dishes. photos are also important though!! but even fantastic photos of frou frou foods or too many dishes with meat won't make me want to read the cookbook.

  5. I don't cookbooks since I don't cook but my mom does and I like to look at the pictures of the food because they're all so yummy. ;)

Hi, Alexis! =) I wish there had been multiple entries, because then I would have picked the ingredients and the simplicity. The first thing I look at really is the list of ingredients because if something seems too exotic to find at my grocery store, then I know I can't make the recipe or have to do the added challenge of finding a decent substitute. But assuming that I'm familiar with all the ingredients, it's totally simplicity that wins me over. Granted, some recipes are more simple than they seem on the page. That's why I tend to watch cooking shows rather than read cookbooks--although that's probably not encouraging to cookbook writers and publishers! =P

  8. I wanted to select every option in the poll because I find them all important to the books/recipes I choose. In the end, I chose simplicity because even though I love looking at the more complex recipes, I'm not always confident that I can pull off the toughies. Love this question, though!

  9. It all depends on the type of food I'm looking to cook n what I'm in the mood for.

  10. I love trying new recipes, but I always look for practicality of ingredients -- I'm sorry, but when a recipe starts calling for vanilla beans or other expensive or hard to find ingredients I'm not likely to try it (unless it's really yummy sounding and there's a special occasion coming up.....)

  11. When I'm looking at a recipe book, I definitely judge it on how appealing the reecipes sound, then how long most of them take. Because while a marinated chicken sounds fabulous, I probably won't be looking at recipes days in advance.

  12. 50/50 between the pictures and the type of ingredients required.

  13. I love to cook and I usually look for things that look fantastic. I also want to make sure that the recipe doesn't involve too many pre-made ingredients. Like recently I got all excited over a recipe in a magazine then I realized that they used store bought gnocchi... and they used store bought sauce... I like to make things from scratch.
