Why I Love Wednesdays... Types of Endings

Reflections of a Bookaholic

I am returning with my new feature... Why I love which takes place on Wednesdays. Today's proclamation of love concerns our Favorite Types of Endings.

Why I Love...Happily Ever Afters

So many people complain about authors who feel the need to tie everything into a neat happy bow.  Obviously this isn't realistic.  It might even be seen as a bit sappy.  BUT... I'm a sappy kind of girl.  *gasp*  I know.  Seriously.  Don't let this get out to just anybody.

I definitely read to escape the real world and it wouldn't be a true escape if the people I read about didn't end up happy at the end.  Not normal happy either.  It's got to be the big grandiose almost everything falls into place for the main character kind of endings.  I can't help it.  Don't judge me.

The girl has to get the guy (or catch the bad guy), the promotion, AND the forgiveness of the [mom, sister, best friend, or whatever the problem].  Who gets everything?!  The characters I like to read about :)  I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I can never get enough of that feel good feeling that comes when everything ends up just right.  Maybe Disney warped me as a child.  Happy endings put a smile on my face every time.

Which endings do you love? Feel free to create your own post and link up.  Don't want to create an entire post?  Tell me your favorites in the comments.  Thanks for stopping by for another week of Why I Love Wednesdays!!

  1. The happy ones, the ones that make me happy, the ones that make me smile :) I do have a friend who like the the sad and bittersweet ones but I think that there is only one time I have liked one of those. Cos it had to end like that. All other times I demand me HEA

  2. Yes! Me toooo! I love a happy ending!
So many people complain "it was too predictable" I don't care so much that it was predictable as long as it ended the way I wanted it to! I always want the girl to get the hot guy (as long as he is not a jerk). I always want them to live "happily ever after". My daughter always says " it was too unbelievable. Things don't always end happy like that" again - I don't care! This is FICTION! Give me my happy little ending tied up in a neat pink bow and I love it!
And I also hate a "non-ending" don't give me 350 pages of gripping suspense only to leave the bow untied!

I do like happy endings but not all the time. I'm one of those that likes an ending thst surprises me. It also really depends on my mood but often I find the books that don't end perfectly are the ones that stick with me the most.

  4. Hmmm... that is interesting...and ending that makes you want to start again. Which books make you feel that way?

  5. Exactly! You can't read historical romances and not like HEAs

  7. I agree that I like most of my questions answered. Leaving unanswered questions drive me batty.

  8. oops! See... I'm not used to new things. My apologies for the double post!

  9. I don't like the suspenseful endings because I feel like the author is trying to bully me into buying his or her next book. I'm just like that. But I don't mind them when I already have the next book handy.

  10. Alexis - can you please remove my double comment? Thanks, Belle

  11. You are right! I like the thought that they have to be inspired by something. I really thought I would be the only one picking HEAs. So I'm glad I'm not the only one.

  12. Exactly!

Yes, I'm not just a romantic, I'm the sappy kind. I'm the kind that says "ahhh" throughout movies and my husband shhhs me.

  13. I really thought fewer people would like HEAs. I think you are the normal one. I'm going to look up that movie on Netflix.

  14. Haha! That's a big secret but I won't tell. I certainly don't think an ending can be too happy.

  15. Sad and bittersweet. I usually stay away from those.

  16. And I thought I was going to be the only one!

I agree. I don't care if something is predictable and I don't care if it is unbelievable.

  17. Well, it has to leave me thinking. I guess I don't like the big bow ending. I want an ending that makes me want to go right back to the beginning of the book to start again. It doesn't happen that way often though. Alexis, I'm having problems posting on your comments.

I love HEA but you know what I like that most people don't? Endings that are open to interpretation. They make me think more and sort of write my own ending.

  21. Great minds Alexis! Seriously HEA's are just so satisfying. Especially when you're looking for an escape. It makes you dream and hope that things can end up like that in real life. Those stories have to be inspired by something since most people right what they know! I agree 100%!

  22. I'm so glad I'm not the only sappy person around. And though I often find myself insanely jealous of those that get everything at the end, I also wouldn't have it any other way! :)

  23. I completely agree with you! I never complain about a story that ends "too happily". Confession: I even liked the end of Breaking Dawn. That's right. My secret's out. I thought it was perfect.

  24. Haha, well we should get our HEA endings for sure xDDD I <3 outrageously happy endings now and then. But I sometimes really love a depressing one as well, lol. Depends if I'm looking for escapism or realism in my read and what mood I'm in, you know? Just like with music.

    :D

  25. I can't imagine if we all wanted to marry the same person. I would be sooo mad! You make a great point though :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ahhh! Open to interpretation endings!!! Lol. Those boggle my mind too much. I want to be there for all the good stuff. It is too much work for me to figure it out on my own. I'm just lazy.

  27. I like HEA too, but I guess it's usually expected that I like it when it doesn't end HEA. At the same time ambiguous endings bother me so much, I need closure.

  28. You like what you like... nothing at all to challenge about that. What a different world it would be if we were required to enjoy the same thing... same type books, movies, car, career... oh, and here's one. What if we all wanted to marry the same man... or woman!?!

That said... I prefer sophisticated endings. LOL.

  29. Happily Ever After type endings are nice, but they aren't my favorite. I can't enough of those suspenseful endings at the end of serial books. It makes me want to pick up the next book in the series ASAP!

  30. I enjoy happy endings. But I don't necessarily need one to enjoy the book. I just need it to wrap up nice and neat with no unanswered questions or atleast not a lot of unanswered questions. I need closure after reading a book.

  31. OK - I always seem to be going against the crowd and this is no exception. I prefer books with endings that are not HEA. I prefer when the protagonists choose a rougher road. That's why I love the movie 'Roman Holiday' with Audrey Hepburn. No HEA but it's so romantic.

  32. I do like happy endings, though not every book needs to have one. I think something significant should happen to change the character from the start of the book. However, everything should be tied up at the end, unless there's a sequel. Cliffhangers are fun. Although, not so great if you have to wait a year to read a sequel!!

  33. I need a HEA but other than that, I just need to believe the people I have grown to care about are happy!
Other than that, I'm OK with anything really, as long as it makes sense
