Why I Love Wednesdays... Underrated Books

Reflections of a Bookaholic

I am returning with my new feature... Why I love which takes place on Wednesdays. Today's proclamation of love concerns our Love for Underrated Books

Why I Love...Between Shades of Gray

With the "Best of" lists around the corner and winners of the Goodreads awards announced, I just had to spotlight a book that I think should be on every "best of" list out there.  Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys is such a lovely and touching read.  I think anyone who does not read this book is missing out.

Set during WWII, 15 year-old Lina is yanked from her home because the powers that be considered her family Anti-Soviet.  We get a glimpse of the monstrosities inflicted by Joseph Stalin.  Yet, the beauty of this book is in the lovely writing which manages to tell a powerful story through the eyes of a wonderful character.

  1. I think THESE IS MY WORDS by Nancy Turner is SO underrated! I wish more people would read it. It is my favorite book of all time. I've never felt So connected to characters in my life. I was actually crying so hard at the end of the book I needed to call my sisters for comfort! AMAZING!

  2. Yes. I agree. This is definitely my first YA WWII read. I hope there are more to come.

  3. I'm going to look into those. Thanks for sharing. Sometimes it is hard to see the gems but I always feel so grateful when I find them.

  4. This book is on my tbr shelf. I've heard great things about it. It's also nice to have a YA book set in WWII. Yay for WWII books!

  5. I've heard fabulous things about this one, though I haven't picked it up. One of my favourite underrated titles is "Carpe Diem" by Autumn Cornwell. Another is "Fat Cat" by Robin Brande.

  6. Great minds think alike :D
You know I just thinking about that Goodreads thing too. It's a sad thing, but being a sociologist I know it's rule: if it isn't known to a group or groups of people, socially speaking, then the event doesn't exist. So a book can be the best written work in 100 years, if people don't get some aggressive promo going for it it will be as if it had never been written in the first place *sigh* Well, not the author or the few that did get wind of it, but on a large scale things have a different (and often desolating) perspective.

  7. I voted for this one too. It was in the YA category. It didn't have a chance against Divergent, but I think it is better.

  8. I'm thinking it is my favorite book of the year but I'm still thinking about it. I think it deserves way more attention though. Hi! I'm going to hope on over and return the visit.

  12. Ahhh! I love the things you say. I definitely agree about the blinking sign. Yeah the topic sounded good at the time. But I think I thought of it in the midst of GoodReads initial voting. I felt like the books were all books that had a lot of promotion and hype. Not all books get that you know.

  13. I've heard a lot about Between Shades of Gray and how beautifully written it is. But I just don't have the desire to read it. :/

  14. I voted for this book as a best of 2011 book on Goodreads (I forget which category). I don't think it won, though, which is a shame because you're right--it's a book everyone should read (and one they'd all surely love once they did).

  17. I love this book. It was so moving. I listened to the audiobook, and I would definitely suggest going that way. The narrator did a great job.

  24. Yes, yes, yet another title I SO wanna read and probably get to in like 3 years, lol. I've had my eye on it from the moment I took a peek at that cover, it's like a big blinking sign saying "I'm special", you know?
And I dunno which books that I like are underrated. Honestly, I pay little mind to ratings unless I know the rater, you know? If it's not a rating given by someone I know enough about to have an opinion on weather their opinion is valuable to me or not, it's not really on my mind. Knowing me probably most of the books I really liked or loved aren't on other people's favs lists, lol.
