Mini-Review: The Girl Who Chased the Moon

The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen
Genre: Contemporary Fiction, Magical Realism
Pages: 180 (Ereader)
Source: eLibrary

Description:
Emily Benedict came to Mullaby, North Carolina, hoping to solve at least some of the riddles surrounding her mother’s life. Such as, why did Dulcie Shelby leave her hometown so suddenly? And why did she vow never to return? But the moment Emily enters the house where her mother grew up and meets the grandfather she never knew—a reclusive, real-life gentle giant—she realizes that mysteries aren’t solved in Mullaby, they’re a way of life: Here are rooms where the wallpaper changes to suit your mood. Unexplained lights skip across the yard at midnight. And a neighbor bakes hope in the form of cakes.

My Rating:
Quick Thoughts: Magical.  Sweet.  Spell-binding. Forgiveness.
I read The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen earlier this summer and have had my eye on this book ever since.  Ms. Allen really knows how to tell a story that grips the reader from the beginning, introducing characters who are unique and sweet.  Strangely, I didn't feel like I was reading at all.  I was just "in" the book and was completely unaware of anything around me.  This sweet read was too short for me. I felt a bit left out of Julia's ending.  Sure I can imagine what happens but I wanted to hear and savor all the sweet goodness of the moments.  I've come to realize that Ms. Allen's books have a "vibe" that I can't wait to feel again.

  10. Yeah it is good but it is my one critique as well. It is hard to say goodbye to a good book but it is even harder when you can see that there is more to tell. I like to know what happens.

  11. It's almost shocking when it ends. I'm disoriented. It's my favorite part of the reading experience.

  16. I loved this book! It isn’t my favorite of hers, but I love it nonetheless. I have read them all and I think The Sugar Queen was the one I enjoyed the most although I had several issues with it. As you said, her books have a special vibe to them that make them almost magical, very enjoyable. Happy B-Day, BTW! Don't eat too much cake, save some space for tomorrow!

  18. I would read The Peach Keeper first. It's not that's better but it's longer and in Ms. Allen's case, longer is better.

  24. Sounds like a charming book filled with magical elements. I don't know how I'd feel about wallpaper changing to fit my mood, might make me try to have happier thoughts I suppose. It's good that it was so good, you wanted it to be longer. That's always a great quality.

  25. I'm glad you like S.A.A. , she's an awesome author. Her books are such easy, magical reads - almost like the ultimate comfort reads. I hope she has a new one in the works, although she's been battling breast cancer so I doubt she'll have a new one anytime soon.

  33. I actually have read all of her books and find Sugar Queen to be her best. While all of her books have this beautiful way of turning the simplest elements of ordinary life magical - I found the Sugar Queen was slightly more complex in regards to characters. I also was a bit surprised by the ending, and that's something that doesn't happen too often with novels these days. So, that really made the book appeal to me. All of her books have touched my heart in some way though.
