Mini-Review: The Awakening

The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
Darkest Powers Trilogy #2
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
Pages: 268 (ereader)
Source: eLibrary

Description:
If you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl—someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I'm as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment . . . I was genetically altered by a sinister organization called the Edison Group.

My Rating:

Quick Thoughts: Transitioning.  Sinister.  Endearing
While this story seemed to focus on transitioning to the next phase of the trilogy, I found myself engrossed in the characters and their predicament.  This story picks up right where the first book ends, which means you have to read the books in order, and continues to follow the four teens, Chloe, the brothers, Derek & Simon, and Tori.  I love that I got to see more of Derek but  found Simon to be a mere distraction (Okay I'm biased).  Instead of an ongoing story, I wish each book had its own discernible plot and problem.  The entire trilogy could have been one long book as each book concerns a series of events that will, I'm sure, have a resolution in the third book.  One scene literally gave me nightmares because it creeped me out to the extrme.  Just imagining the situation gave me chills.  The trilogy isn't scary but Ms. Armstrong is quite adept at vivid descriptions

I'm sure you know which scene I'm talking about. It is still plastered in my brain. Lol.

  3. I enjoyed the 3rd but felt...it was rushed at the end. I'll be writing a review next week some time.

  4. Thanks. I wish I had better quick thoughts for this one but those were the first things that came to mind so I went with it.

  5. I liked The Awakening a bit better than the Summoning because I knew more about what was going on. I didn't love the plot...exactly. I enjoyed the characters...more.

  6. I'll try Bitten then. Especially if it the best PNR/UF you've ever read. I mean that says a lot.

  7. I absolutely {HEART} Derek!! I can see so much in him and he was such a complex character. Plus, I love that...oh I hate to provide spoilers. But I like Ms. Armstrongs choices in the unconventional :)

  8. Well this trilogy is old. So they are all out. I read them for the read-a-thon so I was able to read them all together. This is a good thing because they would not work if you had to wait a year for the next release. As for being on the fence...I have another review to go so maybe I'll persuade you or make you feel confident in your choice to skip :P

I'm not familiar with Resident Evil though the name sounds familiar.

  9. Yeah it was too bad about the nightmares but I really enjoyed the book so maybe it was worth it.

  14. I liked the Awakening a little more than I did The Summoning (and I liked this one a fair bit) because I loved seeing Derek and Chloe together! :D

I can't wait to see what you think of book 3 :D

  15. This is the same author of the Women of the Otherworld series, right? I read Bitten which is one of the best PNR/UF books I’ve ever read, just amazing. The rest of the series I didn’t like as much and only read books 2 and 3, but I do recommend Bitten… I’ve heard great things about this series as well, I might have to check it out.

  16. Awesome mini-review! I loved this series. I was so sad when it ended. What did you think about Derek? He was my favorite character!

  17. I really love when an authors' writing is so good and vivid it can evoke strong emotions and visuals for the reader. The fact that you had nightmares (sorry you had nightmares) is a testament to the author's writing skills. I also dream of books that are really vivid. This trilogy is sounding more and more interesting. Nice review.

  18. Reading the snippet instantly made me think of Resident Evil. I haven't read any of the books. But I don't like it when I have to read previous books to follow the current release, and yet I don't like reading a current release and being fed all the previous books in attempt to catch up the reader. I guess I'm on the fence. :-D
