Why I Love...My Car!
This particular topic has come up a couple of times before and each time I chose a different location. But I've found that when my life changes, so does my reading habits. Now that I've graduated from law school and I'm officially homeless while I wait for bar results (November!!), I don't have the same schedule or freedom that I once had when I had my own place and room.
Surprisingly, my car is one of my new favorite reading spots. It is where I can safely listen to audiobooks and have a bit of privacy. I've given up on saving the best books to read in paper form. If I kept doing that, I would never get any guilt-free reading done. Between visiting my brother, driving to work, I usually need a hands free reading option. I probably finish two audiobooks a week compared to one a week on paper. Audiobooks have really and truly grown on me. I could never in a millions years have predicted such a preference before now.
P.S. For those of you who listen to audios... do you listen when other people around? I never listen to audiobooks when other people are in the car with me because I feel like it is rude but I'm usually so bummed about it because I'm itching to find out what's next in my latest read.

I love the topic! I listen to audiobooks almost every time I drive. My job requires me to log around 10,000 miles in the fall, so that's when I listen to the most number of audiobooks.
ReplyDeleteEvery once in a while I'll listen to them with someone else. My mom loves audiobooks just as much as I do, so I'll purchase one I know we'll both like. I even finally got my fiance to listen to one with me on a long trip. Even he agreed it was a great way to break up the time and relax a little!
I used to get my audiobooks through Audible, but I've started to just get them on paperbackswap, as it's much cheaper than $14.95 a month. Where do you get yours?
Listening while driving really shortens the drive and makes me less impatient on the road. It had really made something that could be very tiring a great experience.
DeleteI hear you on the car being your favorite place! I love both reading books and listening to audio books in my car. Especially because several times a week I escape my work day and take my lunch hour in my car. I usually end up reading or listening to an audio book during that time. It really helps me refresh for the afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI never thought about taking my lunch hour in my car. That's a good idea. That would solve many problems.
DeleteI am SO with you. I never would have imagined how much I love audios. And I too loooooooooooooooooooooove having time in my car to listen to my audios.
ReplyDeleteDo I listen when someone is around, if it's my husband (which most of the time it is) then yes. He loves listening to talk radio so he doesn't mind listening to things even when he's not really up to date with what's going on. I usually give him a quick summary and pop it on.
You have me thinking, maybe I'll whip out a post about my favorite place to listen to audios.
PS Sorry your kinda homeless.
DeleteIt sounds like you're coping great.
I've got my fingers crossed for you.
My enjoying audios is the surprise of the century :) You should create a post! Everyone would love it.
DeleteThanks! Being homeless is quite unfortunate. I can't wait until November! Well I can...because I'm afraid of those results.
DeleteIt IS really difficult to get uninterrupted reading time. I used to try to read on my lunch at work but it never failed, I ALWAYS got interrupted.
ReplyDeleteI tried to read at lunch in a nice shady spot under a tree. But spiders kept crawling on me so I gave up. I don't want to read in the office because I don't want people to think I'm a slacker simply because they don't know it is my lunch time.
DeleteYou do change your answer every time! Sorry about the kind of homeless part, but at least your able to get comfy in your car and listen to your hearts content!
ReplyDeleteI really need to get me some more audiobooks. I have The Daughter of Smoke and Bone and one other but I haven't listened to them yet.
I know! My car is the only place I can call my own. *sniffle* Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a great one to start with.
DeleteI can't listen to audiobooks with people around - I get pissed off when they keep interrupting me - and I also try no to listen while on public transportation because I get so lost in the narration that I don't pay attention to my surroundings and that isn't right.
ReplyDeleteI do love reading in the bus, though it has caused me to miss my stop a few times.
I used to love to read under the sink in my bathroom because I could read late at night without people bugging me about turning off the light. It was rather cold though.
And I like to read in my bed too. :D or curled up on the couch.
I can see how it could make you miss stops. I wish we had public transportation. It seems like a stress-free way to get around. I've yet to really listen when other people are around so I'm not sure if it would work. I don't want people to think I'm rude and I certainly do not want them to interrupt.
DeleteIt's amazing, but I STILL have never heard an audiobook beyond a small kids book. It just hasn't appealed to me yet. Of course, until you try it, you don't know if you'll like it, so it's not blacklisted or anything for me yet.
ReplyDeleteSame here! I don't know why exactly. I did try to download Anna Karenina on my phone but it sucked up so much space that I had to delete it. I'll get around to audiobooks sooner or later :)
DeleteIt's something that I didn't get either. I didn't understand why people would listen to a book when you could just read it. But I've gradually gotten into it. Plus it has been a lifesaver when I'm stuck in traffic. I can honestly say that I'm ALWAYS reading since I'm now reading when I'm driving as well :)
DeleteLoL why are you homeless woman?
ReplyDeleteI'm still on the fence with Audiobooks! It's all about the narrator and sometimes I just can't connect with a narrator, especially when they try to do the voices.
I definitely understand the convenience of them though, especially when you're at work or driving.
You have to try audiobooks! Then you truly can read everywhere!
DeleteI'm homeless because I have a temporary job after graduation and I'm working there until bar results come in November. No one would lease me a place for less than one year lease and I wasn't willing to commit to a lease that long because I don't know which city I will be assigned to after bar results. *sigh* so I'm mooching until bar results come in. Then I can make some decisions and hopefully have a home. My poor hubby. He's in limbo too but living with family.
I love audiobooks in the car. I never listen to them when others are in the car with me. And I am had a hard time listening to them at home. For some reason the car is the best.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, how is your brother doing?
The car is best but I've taken a couple in my house because they were too good to leave. I'd listen while I packed or cleaned or something like that.
DeleteAudiobooks have grown on me lately too. I do a lot of walking and was getting tired of listening to music on my iPod, so . . .
ReplyDeleteI do a lot of driving and it definitely makes sitting in traffic easier.
DeleteMy 2 favorite places to read are on my back porch and in bed :)
ReplyDeleteGreat luck with your bar exam results!
Thanks! I'm crossing my fingers :)
DeleteI read in my room. Sorry, to hear about your troubles! Hope you pass the bar and find a place soon!
