Why I Love...Laura Ingalls
Growing up, I got most of my book recommendations from my mother, at least initially. I loved reading Nancy Drew and all the other books that my mom read because even when I was younger, I loved discussing books. If I read books that someone else read (my mom) I would have someone to talk to about them. I haven't changed much have I?
One such series brought to me from my mother was the Little House on the Prairie books. Although this series was centered around the entire Ingalls family, I, of course, became fast friends with Laura herself. From the beginning I recognized Laura as a complex character who was smart but often had to learn lessons the hard way. She was always trying to show her dad that she could do so many things and I loved reading about the bond between her and her father. When the series first started Laura was pretty young and I loved growing up with her (I felt the same about Anne from Anne of Green Gables). Of course I was fascinated by this completely alien world in which she lived but I only loved hearing about these adventures through her eyes. It was the first time I learned about covered wagons and the hardships of that time. I remember feeling truly sorry for Laura when I realized she had to go outside for the bathroom. It's been a long time since I read this series but I remember loving it, and talking to my mom about a plucky girl by the name of Laura.

I loved this series ! So many memories. I was amazed that they were based on true stories ! I had so many of these books when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteI remember trying to read the ones where she was older but they just weren't the same
I didn't know they were based on true stories until I was much older. They are really simple reads so I'm not sure they would capture my attention today.
DeleteOh mine was Anne of Green Gables, I adored that series. I had Anne of Green Gables in special edition. I dont know how many times I reread it as a kid. But I also adored the Drina Dancing series by Jean Estriol it was an out of print british series that they did a reprint of 5 of the books in the late 80s early 90s. At the time I was "born to dance" and devoured those books like they were my key to becoming a prima ballerina !

I LOVED Anne of Green Gables. I did a post on that series before I didn't want to repeat.
DeleteGreat choice! I love Laura Ingalls too!
ReplyDeleteYess!
DeleteNever read the novels, but loved the television series.
ReplyDeleteI never watched the series.
DeleteDo you know that I'm not sure I ever read her?
ReplyDeleteI will definitely make sure that doesn't happen with Baby Whimsy.
She already has a copy of the first book.
This is a great series for Baby Whimsy.
DeleteYou know I've never read The Little House on the Prairie books. I wasn't exactly a fan of the tv shoe either but now I feel like I missed out on something really great. Laura sounds like a lot of fun and the place she grew up sounds loving and cozy despite not having modern conveniences.
ReplyDeleteI never watched the series. Surprisingly, they didn't interest me.
DeleteI love Laura too :D I loved the tv-series and I loved reading the books
ReplyDeleteI never watched the series.
DeleteI used to love this series. I had a copy of them all at one point, but I don't remember if I finished them all. I think not. Maybe I should revisit that!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I finished them all either. I know I was really close.
DeleteOh, that's a lovely pick
ReplyDeleteI only got to read a handful of kid books when I was a kid - I read a whole bunch of classics the year I was 9 LOL - so my picks might be a bit odd.
But I always had a soft spot for the Canterville Ghost in Oscar Wilde's story of it. I always found him rather funny in a pathetic sort of way.
I never read those. Oh I'm whollfully lacking when it comes to my classics.
DeleteI love the Little House Series. I actually had the chance to read the series for a second time as an adult. There is a two year homeschool study that is built entirely around the series and we used it for out children. It was a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds fun!
DeleteI absolutely agree, I will always have a place in my heart for Little House and all that it stands for. Books, TV show - I love it all and I hope my girls will let me share it with them. As soon as my oldest is big enough to read "chapter" books she is getting the full set! :D
ReplyDeleteYou are right. I like what they stand for.
DeleteMy sister and you would get a long famously! She was a huge Little House on the Prairie fan :) She had all the books, watched the series on a "not to miss bases", and could quote it too.
ReplyDeleteHaha! I don't know about quotes but I'm so with her for everything else (though I didn't really follow the series)
DeleteLOVED Anne of Green Gables, but as I was telling Jade, I've only watched the movies, never read the books. I know such a shame on me.
ReplyDeleteAnd the same with Little House, watched the show, but never read the books, but I still count it as a staple of my childhood because it always brings back warm memories.
I need to go find Anne of green Gable movie because I didn't even know about it.

Thanks! Sorry for my late response. I'm in the midst of finals :)
DeleteOk, are you ready for this reveal? I don't think I am, lol. I hope this won't change your opinion of me, lol. Ok, here goes. My favorite childhood character was Louie from Ann Rice's Interview with the Vampire. Seriously, I kid you not.
ReplyDeleteI was 7 yo when I saw the movie at the cinema (yeah, I'm thinking probably it wasn't age appropriate but I was a very, very mature kid since the very beginning, lol). And I just fell in love with Louie, I had my parents rent me the movie and I think I saw it like probably 30 times in the following years. The book was really hard to come by around those times, it took me years to get a copy of it.
What I loved about him was he was a vampire, but he also had feelings, compassion, and took matters in his own hands. He was also extremely beautiful, because Brad Pitt is freaking amazing and with those bright green eyes and the beautiful nails and all...I just loved him. Yeah, but Louie was absolute favorite for years. And I was a big fan of the chemistry he had with other vampires like Lestat and Armand, though I was too young to put a name to what was what and what sort of chemistry they had, you know? But it was sort of dark, and definitely fascinating. That's when I fell in love with paranormal, really, and I've loved it ever since.
My next favorite character ever was, well, Death, from Meet Joe Black. He still is one of my favorite characters ever. My tendency to love dark characters is a life-long thing xDDD
There were also book characters I loved, but we're talking books written by authors from my country so I'm fairly certain you guys don't know about them. But my favorites were always the cunning characters, the sort of dark, often the villains. Like if it was a Prince Charming and Dragon (antagonist) in a story, I always liked the Dragon more, haha. I dunno why, they were always more interesting to me. All mysterious and different...Myeah. :D
No seriously...that's why I love you! I mean... what an answer. I started reading the first book but I set it down and still have to return to it so I can't say that I understand. Lol. Love your comment!
DeleteI loved Anne of Green Gables and Nancy Drew too. She was by far my fave character. I also enjoyed the Nancy Drew Mystery Files that was published in the 80s. As for Laura Ingalls, I think I only read a few of them. How sad! It would be rather fun to read them now.
ReplyDeleteI loved Anne of Green Gables and Nancy Drew. Oh to be a child again. There are so many goodies!
