Description:
Gabrielle Carelton is one of Queen Elizabeth's most devoted ladies-in-waiting. But her loyalty is put to the test when Her Majesty commands her to marry Scotsman Collin Douglas. When Gabrielle is kidnapped by Collin's twin brother, not even Good Queen Bess can save her. Dubbed the Black Douglas, devilishly handsome Connor is known throughout the land for his magnificent feats of strength and cunning. But now he is in need of an heir. An English bride will bring peace to the warring nations - and give him the son he craves. What he doesn't expect is a woman as passionate as she is proud - and a desire that knows no boundaries. Set against the pageantry and savage splendor of 16th-century England and Scotland, here is the story of a man and a woman who begin as enemies and strangers - and find a love that will triumph against all odds.

My Rating:
This story completely took me by surprise as it was authentic, unpredictable, and cute.  Gabrielle must marry against her wishes, but there is a mix up and she ends up with the wrong brother. There are lots of twists and turns so any additional plot synopsis would give the fun away.  I thought the romance was sweet. the plot engaging, and the characters fun.  I liked how all the characters were different and had a more complex side than what was initially introduced to the reader.  I was slightly irritated at the constant reminders that Gabrielle was overweight and not very pretty.  I got it but I didn't need it on every page.  I understood that it played into her self-esteem but really, I just wanted to focus on the romance.

  1. Have you noticed that romance novels used to be all about the woman being young and pretty and these days they've changed it up big time. Other genres have done it too and there's nothing wrong with that but like you said, it's like they try to make a point of over-emphasising it. I can get very annoying. Other than that though it sounds like a good read.

  3. This does sound good though it would annoy me that they kept pointing out that she wasn't perfect. I mean really, once is enough :)

(don't love the cover though LOL)

  4. AWw, this sounds really cute!! I am the same way, I don't like constant reminders of the character's low self esteem :( Makes me feel sad.

    1. Also, it puts an emphasis on it that I think is negative. Rather than making it seem like it is normal, they make it seem like a tragedy.

  5. It sounds really good!! but yeah, I'm with you, the constant reminder of how a character looks - no matter if she's way gorgeous or not - gets on my nerves every time (it's one of the reasons why I never finished Witches of East End, I got tired of hearing about one of the protagonists boobs every other page).

Anyway, I like the idea of the book :D

So I'm going to try to check it out. thanks for the review.

  6. I definitely like that the female is not this over the top gorgeous girl, but I agree it doesn't need to be emphasized over and over. I will keep an eye out for this.

  7. She looks a bit scared on the cover, but I guess that fits with the story

  10. Sounds like a winner and I love me some historical romance. I do love the stories of the kidnapped brides who ends up falling for her kidnapper. They are always such fun and usually adventurous.
